We are Team Wigan!

Wigan is a borough made up of strong, proud towns, historic villages, and a wealth of green and blue spaces. We’re all about people here, striving to make Team Wigan an amazing and inclusive place to live, work and visit. We foster a kind and positive team culture and work collaboratively to support one another to get things done, whilst encouraging innovation and accountability through our Team Wigan Behaviours.

Here at Wigan, we promote equality of opportunity and are accredited with the disability confident employer symbol which shows our commitment to the employment of disabled people. We are proud to have been presented the Carer confident award by demonstrating we are an inclusive workforce where carers are recognised, respected, and supported.

Here's some ways you can help shape our Community - Lets make a difference together!

Whether you’re on the frontline emptying bins, working behind the scenes in legal or planning, or marrying people and registering babies in our beautiful town halls, it takes a broad variety of skills to keep Wigan Council moving. Many - if not all - people who work for local authorities are inspired by a desire to improve things for local people. And #TeamWigan is no different. It’s made up of lots of special people who champion our borough and everything that makes it brilliant. To shine a light on some of their stories, we launched our Making a Difference campaign.

Why work at #TeamWigan

Team Wigan is who we are and how we do things – a shared culture that celebrates our people and their achievements. It helps us to understand the impact we all have, and how we will achieve our priorities as part of The Deal 2030 strategy. It’s all about how we deliver The Deal together.

We are always happy to support your development and offer lots of career progression opportunities, whether that be an apprenticeship, access to hundreds of courses, support to continue your professional development or even access to a degree in management. Your manager will always be happy to help to develop you.

It’s a busy and friendly place to be, a place where visitors are always blown away at how much we do and how brilliantly we do it. They love the team spirit that we have here, no matter what level you are at, we all roll up our sleeves and work together to get things done.

Employee Rewards and Benefits

As an employer we want to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits. From a generous pension scheme, a range of wellbeing support, to an employee benefits platform - what we offer at Wigan is much more than just a payslip. Here are the fantastic benefits available for our employees.

Team Wigan Deal

The Deal 2030 provides a unifying strategy for the whole of the borough to make it the best possible place to live and work over the coming decade. It was created after the biggest ever consultation undertaken by Wigan Council called The Big Listening Project, which visited 83 locations. across the borough, spoke to 6,000 people directly and collated 10,000 brilliant ideas.

Wellbeing

Our people are what make Wigan a special place to work and creating a place where we are happy and healthy is at the heart of everything we do. Team Wigan has been awarded the Workplace Wellbeing Charter reaccreditation. We were first accredited in 2022, and reaccredited in February 2024, meaning we remain listed on the National Wellbeing Charter. This award shows our ongoing commitment to making Team Wigan an inclusive workplace that promotes employee health and wellbeing.

Employment Pathways

Great work is going on across our services to support young people and residents to secure a role with Team Wigan. Much of this work is done in conjunction with local schools, colleges, and universities as well as partners such as Job Centre Plus. By providing access to training, hands on experience, attending outreach events and wrap around support, we can enable local people to benefit from the great jobs we have on offer whilst securing our future workforce.

Our Team Wigan behaviours make the place what it is. They are all about our shared values and attitudes. It’s how we do things, and means we have created a friendly, positive, inclusive environment where regardless of your job we are all valued. And even better, they are easy to remember:

Be Positive

Take Pride in all that you do and support and develop yourself and others.

Be Accountable

Be responsible for making things better, enabling change and supporting improvement.

Be Courageous

Be open to doing things differently and working collaboratively with others.

Be Kind

Be helpful, generous and thoughtful towards yourself and others.

Some of our current opportunities

Don't just take our word for it!

At the recent APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) awards 2023, Wigan Council was once again named as Council of the Year! We were crowned 'Council of the Year' in the prestigious LGC Awards 2019 and again at the iese Awards 2021. We are also proud to be recognised as a top 100 apprenticeship employer and currently hold the Gold award for the Employer Recognition Scheme.

Our #TeamWigan ethos is the golden thread that inspires our service delivery. It’s the foundation of our workforce culture, built up over the past decade, helping our staff to try new ways of working for the benefit of our residents. Inspired by an asset-based approach, it helps the workforce to be an active part of their community. Staff feel empowered to go beyond just identifying a problem or deficit and simply fixing it, instead they are encouraged to connect residents to their interests and things that make them happy.

"Hi, I’m Kayley, an Online Services Development Officer here at Wigan Council. I started my career as a self-employed singer and pianist, and when I decided to do this part-time, I started looking for jobs at the Council. I’ve always been interested in digital work and applied for a role as a Web Support Officer. I worked in this role for a few years and gathered lots of knowledge, and then applied for my current role."
