Manchester

More than a job, this is Manchester.

A scenic view of Manchester city featuring modern high-rise buildings, historic architecture, and lush green trees under a sunset

A city of boundless creativity, innovation and culture

The first public library, the first passenger railway, and the first football league. The birthplace of the vegetarianism, the NHS, and Vimto.

The inventors of graphene, submarines and modern computing. Manchester is the place where people have always dared to be different and think differently.

Manchester's local government, helping our diverse residents and communities to be the best they can be

Manchester’s come a long way in the last ten years. In 2015, we asked people to imagine their dream Manchester. The Our Manchester Strategy, for the decade from 2015 to 2025, grew from these ambitious hopes for the city.

Our goal was to be a well connected, attractive and welcoming city. A place that limits climate change, where everyone feels safe and lives well. The people of Manchester have achieved a lot and we’re continuing towards that vision of a world-class city.

But with setbacks like Covid and the cost-of-living crisis hitting so many, so hard, there’s still a lot to do. We’re now developing our next ten-year strategy (2025-2035) with residents, with ambitions to tackle gaps in health, wealth and opportunity.

Building a Greener Future

Manchester was home to the industrial revolution. Now we're leading the green revolution, with plans to become a Zero Carbon City by 2038.

All of our staff receive bespoke training to understand their carbon footprint, and ways they can reduce it.

Together, we can make a difference for a more sustainable future.

Our Behaviours

It takes a certain type of behaviour, attitude and way of working to get Manchester where it wants to be. Our people and partners have agreed five ‘behaviours’ – the grounding for how we must work together and treat one another:

We take time to listen and understand

We work together and trust each other

We show that we value our differences and treat each other fairly

We ‘own it’ and we’re not afraid to try new things

We’re proud and passionate about Manchester

Be yourself and thrive

We're working hard to make sure our team mirrors the diversity of our community. We're taking targeted action to support groups who aren't represented enough.

We're determined to be an anti-racist Council, with long-term plans in place. Discrimination, whether that's from other staff or from people using our services, isn't tolerated here - we're quick to address any issues. Manchester's diversity is our strength, and our team should reflect that.
